Master Gardeners Visit Pittsburgh Schools with Poison Prevention Lesson
Posted: June 1, 2012
Did you know that 9 out of 10 accidental poisonings occur in the home and half of these poisonings involve children under the age of 6? The Penn State Pesticide Education program recognizes that small children need to know how to avoid accidental poisonings. By provided teaching materials and a lesson plan to our Master Gardener volunteers, PSU Pesticide Education was able to reach out and educate first graders in the Pittsburgh area about poisons.
The children learned about common household products that are poisonous and what the signal words CAUTION, WARNING, and DANGER mean. Master Gardeners introduced the students to Mr. Yuk, and each child took Mr. Yuk stickers home to put on products around their home. The lesson concluded with the volunteers and children singing the Mr. Yuk song. Allegheny County -Master Gardeners plan to continue this important program during the 2012-2013 school year.
