North Park Demonstration Garden
The Demonstration Garden is sited in front of the Veterans Memorial; the semi-circular stone monument and old cannon provide a unique background for the flowers. The garden, which was started in 1990, encompasses 1800 sq. feet and includes ten annual trial beds, an herb garden, basil and garlic trials and a pollinator garden.
During the growing season, Master Gardeners care for the garden and answer the public’s questions on Wednesday evenings from about 4 to 6 p.m. Watering alone, takes about 4 to 5 hours. This year Master Gardeners volunteered a total of 350 hours in the garden.
In October of 2009, the Master Gardeners who volunteer at North Park were recognized by Allegheny County Council for their efforts to maintain the gardens and provide horticultural education to the residents of Allegheny County.
Here is a passage from the proclamation:
Allegheny County Council, on behalf of the citizens of Allegheny County, hereby commends the Master Gardener volunteers who help maintain the North Park Demonstration Garden. We thank everyone involved in beautifying the park and for promoting proper gardening to the residents of our County.
