Posted: November 29, 2011
Penn State Extension will be offering two free Dining with Diabetes Informational/Registration meetings on Monday, January 30 and Tuesday January 31, 2012 from 6:00-7:30PM at the Penn State Extension Office, 400 N. Lexington Street, 3rd floor, Pittsburgh, PA 15208. You can attend either meeting, but must pre-register by calling the extension office weekdays between 8:30AM to 4:30PM at 412-473-2540.
The actual Dining with Diabetes classes are offered weekly for four weeks, with a three-month follow-up class. Each class offers food demonstrations and tasting, suggested physical activities, take home objectives and discussions designed to inform participants how to manage their own or a loved one's diabetes. Lab tests will be offered to measure HbA1c, pre and post, for a minimal amount. The cost for the overall program is $35.00 for an individual or $50.00 for a husband and wife.
Registered Dietitians or Certified Diabetes Educators will lead sessions addressing:
• Important numbers you need to know
• Planning healthy meals
• Healthy food preparation
• Physical activity
In addition to class handouts and test results, participants also receive the following resources: a pedometer, resistance band for exercising, Joslin Diabetes Center educational materials, a complete collection of Dining with Diabetes recipes and Plate Method placemat. Exercise videos by Leslie Sansone will be available at a reduced price.
If you have been told that you have Type 2 diabetes, you will want to investigate this program.
Please call Cindy Javor, RD, LDN at Penn State Extension-Allegheny County (412)473-2540 if you have questions pertaining to the informational sessions or the overall program.
