  • Dan Hinkley, Forgotten Elements of Good Design: Texture, Movement and Fragrance
    Far from static, sterile and frozen in time, a garden is an ever changing, dynamic entity that ebbs and flows through the seasons and the years.  Hinkley will discuss using this knowledge to one's benefit while siting plants in the landscape, using inspiration from nature as well as imagery from his garden, to show you how to more fully employ and garner enjoyment from movement, texture and fragrance.

    , Shrubs through the Season

    As the seasons change, so should the framework of the garden. This is usually provided by shrubs both for their interesting, colorful, and textural foliage and in many cases for their flowers, fruits, and fall color. This talk examines some of the best for growing in the Pittsburgh area, and especially includes some of the more recent introductions to the marketplace. Combinations and potential companions are also included.

    Organic gardening is just the beginning for a new generation of food-minded gardeners. In this lively presentation, Barbara will explore what these changes mean in terms of soil care and selecting crops and varieties that thrive when grown in the Pittsburgh area.

From courtyards through pocket retreats to verandas and containers, this lecture is lavishly illustrated with dozens of design solutions for those hard-to-treat areas.

  • Dan Hinkley, Plant Marriages: Exceptional Combinations of Foliage and FlowersUsing images from the two gardens he has created- Heronswood and Windcliff- as well as employing experiences he has extracted from natural and crafted landscapes around the world, Dan Hinkley will discuss his personal parameters referenced when siting plants in the garden.  With attention to scale, height differential, repetition and communication between landscape components, Hinkley will discuss how his attention to these simplistic guidelines has resulted in, for him, a more satisfying garden through the seasons.
