Objective
IFSM (Integrated Farm System Model) is a simulation tool for evaluating and comparing economic and environmental effects of alternative management scenarios on representative farms.

Inputs
IFSM requires as much detail as possible about the day-to-day management and processes of the farm, facilities, and equipment and understanding of the producer’s goals. However, numerous sample farms are provided within the model to provide a starting point.
Outputs
Average annual soil balance, runoff, leaching, and emissions of N, P, K and volatile compounds. Crop and animal production measures and economics.
User
IFSM is used worldwide, typically by researchers familiar with farming practices in the region and with the model itself, to answer stakeholder, conservationist, and policy-maker questions at the community and broader levels. IFSM theory and requirements are well-documented in the program’s help file. (see “other”)
Scales of Relevance
Whole farm. No within-farm spatial definition.
Other
IFSM is free and publically available. However, it is a working research model and the interface does not always prevent entry errors or inconsistencies. DairyGHG and DairyGEM are offshoots for emissions evaluations and are more geared to the farmer and extension personnel.
