The purpose of the National Association of Extension 4-H Agents (NAE4-HA) Excellence in 4-H Club Support Award is to encourage and recognize the efforts of Extension professionals who support and strengthen their 4-H club program.  A club is "an organized unit providing a long term experience for youth and adults."

Carol Schurman demonstrated her efforts in supporting and strengthening 4-H club programs by offering an overview of her county's 4-H Horse Club program work. Carol writes "County based 4-H activities which provide opportunities for horse project 4-H clubs can help develop clubs by providing a teamwork activity, assist members in developing horse knowledge, help members get to know each other, and provide a good start for participation in statewide activities for teens in their 4-H careers. In Indiana County, important components of the 4-H horse program are county wide educational events designed to test member horse knowledge and provide a “beyond the club” opportunity.  Each year the county horse leaders committee sponsors a horse bowl contest and hippology contest.  Horse members may also participate in an animal science skillathon.  All of these events do not involve riding horses, so all members can participate.  Evaluation results show that these events are important in the club experience for members and members do gain knowledge from the experiences.  These events also help train older members for participation in state competitive horse events, where the county traditionally places in the top three in the horse bowl contest.  The county has had national horse event participation two of the last five years.”

Carol Schurman was also recogized for her efforts at the state level during the Fall Pennsylvania Association of 4-H Extension Agents Meeting on November 15, 2012 in State College, PA.
