During the last 100 years, it has evolved from its agricultural roots into a globally competitive program offering educational opportunities on everything from government to robotics.

I had the privilege of going to Atlanta, Georgia over Thanksgiving break, November 23-27. I wasn't sure what exactly to expect; I was thinking Congress and dealing with government. Not even close. This experience is one to remember and a once in a lifetime experience.

Last summer, I discovered a unique opportunity to be able to combine two of my greatest joys in life: 4-H and traveling. I had the privilege to travel to National 4-H Congress in Atlanta, Georgia last November as one of forty Pennsylvania delegates.

Youth development organizations can play a vital role in transforming youth into responsible, caring, and successful adults. 4-H is one of the oldest and largest youth development organizations in the world, having several million members in the US alone. In Pennsylvania, 4-H is celebrating its 100th birthday and still has a distinctive presence in many of our area's communities. But some people still aren't exactly sure what 4-H is all about.

May 16, 2012 marked a historical moment for the Pennsylvania 4-H State Council and PA Collegiate 4-H. For the first time since the council's/club's formation the officers were invited to participate in the USDA Secretary of Agriculture, Tom Vilsack's visit to the Penn State, University Park campusans. They often meet one-on-one with their state legislators and promote the 4-H program and high profile events. Lately though, the officers have had some rock star status opportunities, like the one on April 30, 2012.

Traveling to National 4-H Congress was a once in a lifetime experience. The memories I made, the friendships I made, and the friendships I strengthened will last a lifetime. National Congress was not only a very fun experience, but it was also a learning experience.
