Programs
This national initiative provides 4-H curricula and hands-on learning opportunities to school age youth during out-of-school times. Educators and child care and agency staff are trained to develop quality programs and collaborate with other youth organizations to create safe out-of-school communities in which youth can learn leadership, citizenship and life skills.
4-H camp is about making friends, enjoying new experiences, and participating in fun activities. Swimming, water sports, archery, games, arts and crafts, campfire and other activities are offered in a safe, supervised environment. Camping provides opportunities for young people to explore their interests, learn cooperation and teamwork and develop life skills. Pennsylvania 4-H offers residential (sleepover) camps, day camps and special interest camps. 4-H camps are conducted by county 4-H programs or by cooperating groups of counties.
Noncompetitive, age-appropriate activities are designed to teach children about life. A 4-H curriculum sampler covers nature, animals, art, music, the environment, food, fitness, and health.
Training offers opportunities for 4-H youth to develop leadership skills, confront important issues, resolve problems in peaceful ways, and learn about leadership from prominent national and international leaders.
Youth participate in special activities through the U. S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program, Penn State Nutrition Links (EFNEP). Some county 4-H programs also work with other youth-serving agencies.
An estimated 35,000 + children in Pennsylvania have at least one parent currently serving in either the National Guard, Reserve, or Active Duty component of the military. In Pennsylvania, Operation: Military Kids strives to provide support to these children through various programs during this difficult time. We recognize the sacrifices these children make and want to commend them for their courage. OMK is administered through Penn State Cooperative Extension.
4-H Stream Teams Program - Stream Teams are groups of youth actively engaged in water education and activities in their own community. Stream Teams complete 4-H Water Project activities and learn about the water that flows through their local watershed. Activities include topics such as water use and conservation, water science and cycles, and water quality. Stream Teams also choose and participate in service projects as identified in their watershed. Service projects may lead to improved water use efficiency in a community or address water quality issues and enhancements in a local stream among other important topics
A Quest is a fun and educational way to spend time in and learn about a place while getting a little exercise. Quests can take visitors through a historic neighborhood, a beautiful natural area, a charming retail district or any number of unique or interesting destinations.
