Featured speakers include Dr. Chad Dechow, coach of the PA 4-H Dairy Judging Team; Logan Horst, Franklin County Dairy Extension Educator; and Joshua Ebert, Cargill Animal Nutrition.  Logan and Joshua are both All-American collegiate judges who have placed in the top five overall and for oral reasons at the National Intercollegiate Dairy Judging Contest.  Other members of previous Penn State Dairy Cattle Judging Teams will work with 4-H members to develop their reasons styles and note-taking abilities.  Youth participants will be able to give at least one set of reasons to Penn State dairy judging team members.

The topics for 4-H and FFA members include:

  • Judging Opportunities for PA 4-H and FFA Members
  • Using the PDCA Scorecard to Make Decisions
  • What to Expect in Judging Contests
  • Oral Reasons and Taking Notes
  • Developing Your Personal Terminology
  • The Contest Official—How Are Contestants Evaluated?

Topics for coaches include:

  • Judging Opportunities for PA 4-H and FFA Members
  • How are Judging Contests Designed?

Cost for the workshop is $5 per person, payable the day of the clinic. This covers lunch, judging guides, and a CD with sample oral reasons from state 4-H team members. We are requesting that interested coaches and youth register prior to the event by calling Molly Martin at 814-865-7638 or emailing her at mjf217@psu.edu by Wednesday, January 25, so that we can properly plan for lunch and clinic materials. Participants can pay with cash or by check payable to Penn State Dairy Science Club at the door.  The morning sessions will begin in 101 Thomas Building. This is the building on the corner of Pollock and Shortlidge Roads. For a campus map, please see www.campusmaps.psu.edu. We suggest parking in either the Eisenhower Parking Deck (off Shortlidge Road)  or the East Parking Deck (off Bigler Road)  and then walking to Thomas Building.  If you have questions, please contact Molly Martin.
