Rad Razberries Celebrate Season of Abundance

The Rad Razberries are part of the 4H Club, sponsored by the Pike County Cooperative Extension. Its members spend happy times learning about gardening and working plots in the Smith-Harker Community Garden on Wilson Hill Road. Everything is growing great now that the beetles are (almost) history. To do this they need special skills: 4H Master Gardener Angela Williams said they use no pesticides, plant no GMO seeds, and are strictly organic.

These days, many Home Economics courses have been cut from school curriculum. Children miss out on learning basic life skills. Many children do not know how to hem, replace a button or make a simple alteration. At the Masthope Mountain Community 4-H activity center, sewing is one of the projects that children may choose.

Stop the Invasion: Unwanted Plants, Bugs and Other Pests

Penn State Extension and Pennsylvania 4-H, with funding from the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture, created Stop the Invasion: Unwanted Plants, Bugs and Other Pests, a hands-on curriculum to address the threat of invasive species.
Youth in the Science Track of the 2017 Wildlife and Forestry Field Day learned to apply wildlife and forestry knowledge in on-site skills sessions. A sign language interpreter (center) assisted in explaining tree measuring technique.
Members Learn, Explore and Compete at 4-H Wildlife and Forestry Field Day

The 2017 4-H Wildlife and Forestry Field Day, held at Rock Springs, PA, was another “wild” success! 4-H youth and adults from across the state explored the wildlife and forestry sciences. The event featured an Exploratory Track for younger 4-H youth and a Science Track for teens. The theme for the Exploratory Track presented tools and methods for wildlife and forestry research, while the Science Track focused on applying research knowledge to managing forests and wildlife.
