4-H Club News - September 2012
Posted: September 19, 2012
Beginning in September we will have a new community club starting in the county. The club will meet at the Greystone Building in Nazareth. Meetings are tentatively scheduled to start at 7:30pm. At our 1st meeting on September 14th we are going to decide on meeting dates and times. What projects the club would like to do. We will talk about 4-H expectations of a club. We would also start discussing community service projects. Anyone interested in joining this community club please contact Heather at g_hstofanak@verizon.net. We are also looking for adult volunteers to help with this club.
Backtrackers:
Backtrackers 4-H Horse & Pony Club wants to congratulate Caitlin Gallagher, Amanda Majka, and Nicole Fox for representing Backtrackers and Northampton County at the 2012 State Achievement Days. Unfortunately, the fourth member of this team, Allison Moyer, was unable to attend due to health reasons. The girls participated in the Senior Hippology Contest, placing 5th overall. Caitlin Gallagher brought home a 7th place individual ribbon. Congrats!
Beef:
A lot of our Beef club members went to the Plainfield Fair, congrats to everyone on a job well done. Most recently was the 4-H Round-Up. The Beef Club did not hold their usual show this year. Instead we had four events in which you were judged, and received points. The first event was a fit- off, everyone had to fit their own animal while a judge watched. Members were then given points based on how well they did. The next event was a judging competition. The judges judged first, then the 4-H'ers. You received points for your answers compared to the judges answers. Next was an obstacle course. You had to take your animal through a series of obstacles, and were judged on how well you handled the animal (showmanship). The last event was called pairs. You had to find an animal that looked like yours and pair up. You were judged on how similar your animals were. In the end the points where added up, and 4-H'ers received useful prizes instead of ribbons. We had fun, but learned a lot at the same time! Our next show will be at the Blue Valley Fair. Hope to see you all there!
LeatherCrafters:
The LeatherCrafters members held their final club meeting in June. They combined an ice cream party with a much needed community service project for the 4-H office. The members of the LeatherCrafters club all worked together to build a large wooden drop box to be donated to the 4-H office for large mail and other 4-H related papers. The members assembled the box using hand and power tools, sanded it, covered it with a metal roof to make it more weather resistant, and finally painted it! The box will have a lock on it so only the 4-H extension staff will be able to open it. It was on display at the 4-H Fair. After the fair, it will be placed outside the 4-H office for easy access by all members wishing to drop off papers when the office is closed. Look for it at the end of August. Kudos to the LeatherCrafters members for a job well done!
Livestock:
What an exciting summer it has been for the Northampton County Livestock Club. We set a goal to meet the 100 hour challenge and we did it. You could find the club at Easton, Nazareth, & Bath’s Farmer’s Market promoting 4-H. We helped at Burnside Plantation with the Sheep to Shawl Summer Program and Heritage Days in Easton. We will remember the smiles we brought to the residents of Alexandra Manor and kids in Easton at Summer Nights. For our 4-H community you could find members making mask at Adventure in Ag, selling cookies at Tractor Supply, helping with tree sale, attending learning for life and ethics training. Our members exhibited their sheep, goats, chickens, steers, and alpacas at several local fairs this summer.
To say the least our members have been busy. We would like to thank our parents and leaders who made this all possible for us. The club looks forward to planning our 2013 year. Since our club continues to grow starting in September we will now be meeting at Gracedale Nursing Home in the county meeting room. Our meeting will still be held on the 3rd Wednesday of each month starting at 7:00pm. Anyone interested in joining our club please e-mail our leader Heather at g_hstofanak@verizon.net.
