Curing Gourds

The rush of the first holiday of the season is over. Halloween is gone and all of the candy is too. The pumpkins and jack-o-lanterns are now part of the compost pile. However, with Thanksgiving a few weeks away, most people keep gourds around as decorations. They are ideal color for the whole fall season, as they do not rot like pumpkins. Also you may want to consider drying, or more precisely curing, gourds to make them last even longer.

National 4-H Week Pizza Party Held

The Throop 4-H Community Club had a Pizza party Friday, October 7, in celebration of National 4-H Week. Some of the members who attended were 5th generation 4-Her’s. The organizational leader, Catherine Darko, gave a brief overview of the History of 4-H.

Hilda Lewis Given Honorary Award

On July 14th, 2011, Hilda Lewis from Glenburn will be the first to receive a newly created award in her honor at Hickory Run State Park, 4-H Camp Shehaqua. The "Hilda Lewis Spirit of 4-H Camp Shehaqua Award" was created to not only honor Hilda for her service at this annual resident camp, but as an award to honor those volunteers who will follow her as award winners, and this distinctive honor.
