Falcon Banding

Wednesday, May 9th was a big day for two little peregrine falcons. At the Rachel Carson State Office Building, on a 15th floor ledge, there has been a nest of falcons for thirteen years.
Each year a team of conservationists travel to Harrisburg to band the hatchlings. The team also will weigh the birds, determine the sex, and check the health of the birds. This year the hatchlings were two active and healthy little males. Dauphin County 4-H was invited to participate in the banding event in celebration of 100 years of 4-H in Pennsylvania. Lia Schmittel, a 4-H member and co-op intern with Penn State Extension is pictured holding one of the falcon hatchlings.
