January 28 Minutes

The meeting of the Cumberland County Livestock Committee was held at the Cumberland County Extension Office on Thursday, January 28, 2016.

The meeting was called to order by President Lois Zeigler at 7:00 p.m.

Present:

Scott Dale, Cindy Finkenbinder, Glenn Finkenbinder, Mary Kutz, Peggy Myers, Kathy Walton, Ron and Lois Zeigler.

Secretary’s Report:

Minutes from the October 22, 2015 meeting were accepted as presented.

Treasurer’s Report:

Peggy Myers presented the livestock treasurer’s report as of December 31, 2015 with a balance of $3,776.36, Improvement to fairgrounds account: $6,366.64, Reserve account for sales commission: $ 1,626.02 and CD balances of $4,588.55 and $7,507.50.  Reports will be filed for audit.

Unfinished Business:

No unfinished business was brought before the committee.

New Business:

Countywide opportunities

Kathy Walton reported on the Farm Show results for 4-H members that were reported in the News and Notes.  The Alpaca Club had their first show at the Farm Show.  The Cumberland County 4-H Farm Safety Team won first place and the 4-H Drill Team did fantastic.  Additionally, there were no new farm show tags needed. Cumberland County did well.  Kathy stated an email was sent to all members who do not have the enrollment forms completed.  Kathy also reported on upcoming events: Volunteer Appreciation Dinner held on February 19, 2016 from 4:30-6:30 Penn State Judging March 19, 2016, Speak Out Night is April 14, 2016.

Shippensburg Fair Report:

Ron Zeigler reported that the Livestock premium book is almost completed and is due to Jamie Rhine on March 1, 2016.There were 237 letters with a magnet mailed to buyers to save the date for the combined sale on July 30, 2016.  Ron stated that a combined weigh-in will be held May 11, 2016 from 3:00-8:00.

Budget:

Ron Zeigler and Peggy Myers presented a 2016 budget for the livestock committee. There was one note to add $50.00 for Strawmyre’s gift certificate for storing our scales at their warehouse. On a Mary Kutz/Glenn Finkenbinder motion, the budget was accepted with this change.

Scholarship:

Cindy Finkenbinder reminded the committee to inform their members that the Livestock Scholarship applications are due May 1, 2016. Cindy will send to Kathy Walton to post on the website.

Panels:

Glenn Finkenbinder led a discussion on purchasing panels to divide the 6 x 6 pens into two 3 x 6 pens. This would provide a smaller pen for members with only one or two animals. Matt Knoll would build the panels at a cost of approximately $325.00 each. On a motion from Cindy Finkenbinder/Scott Dale to purchase 5 panels was approved. Glenn will order the panels.

Wool and Sheep Growers Banquet:

Peggy Myers announced that the Wool and Sheep Growers banquet will be held February 22, 2016 at Penn Township Fire Hall.
