4-H Activities
2008 Project Year
4-H Officer Training - Overnighter on Jan. 25-26 and County Training on Feb. 20. 4-H club officers will meet to receive training for their respective offices.
Southwest Leaders' Symposium - Feb. 22-23 Indiana Holiday Inn. Regional training opportunity for volunteer leaders to participate in workshops, informal activities, and fellowship with other 4-H leaders.
Southwest Teen Leader Retreat - Feb. 29 - March 2 - Laurelville Conference Center (Westmoreland County) Opportunity for 4-H'ers 13 years and older to meet new friends from the southwest region, to participate in leadership and personal development workshops, and enjoy recreational activities.
Spring Kickoff - March 8 at 7-10 p.m. at Mount Chestnut Presbyterian Church - A countywide 4-H event sponsored by the 4-H Youth Council to kick off the busy 2008 4-H season. This dance is planned to bring together 4-H members from all 4-H clubs throughout the county.
In-Betweeners Retreat - March 14-16 at Camp Lutherlyn. Opportunity for 4-H'ers 9 - 12 years of age to participate in fun, learning workshops, and enjoy recreational activities with youth from the southwest region.
State 4-H Awareness Week - March 16-22 Provides an opportunity for 4-H clubs and the county program to promote 4-H to the local community.
Penn State Dairy, Horse, and Livestock Judging Contests - April 5 at Ag Arena at University Park Campus.
Northwest Teen Leadership Retreat - April 11-13 at McKeever Center in Sandy Lake for teens ages 13 and older. Will also provide camp counselor training.
County Leader Update Trainings - April 23 & 26. Leaders must attend at least one leader training within a consecutive two year period. Four leader update trainings will be scheduled per year.
State Capital Days - April 13-15 Annual event held in Harrisburg with 2 county 4-H'ers attending. Must be at least 15 years of age. Members must apply with final selection of delegates made after application deadline.

Horse Project Clinic - May 3-4 Butler Fairgrounds
Market Sheep, Swine, and Goat Weigh-in - May 10 Butler Farm Showgrounds - Tag only at 8:30 a.m. Tag and weigh from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.
4-H Sponsored Open Horse Shows at the Butler Fairgrounds - Tentative: May 31 - June 1, Aug. 2-3, and Aug. 24
NW Reg. "Teen Boot Camp" at Mercer Co. 4-H Park - May 31-June 1
Project Designation Forms - Due on Monday, June 2 for horses, dairy cattle, goats, and breeding livestock. Designation forms identifying the animal(s) to be used as projects must be submitted to the extension office no later than Monday, June 12nd by 4:30 p.m. Even if registration information for purebred animals is pending, the animal must be identified with the extension office by June 2nd.
County 4-H Sunnyview Day and County Presentation Day - June 11, Wednesday. 4-H members bring project posters, displays, and project animals to "share" with the residents of Sunnyview Home. The home provides a free picnic lunch for all 4-H participants and their families.
Also during 4-H Day this year, we will be having our County Presentation Contest and the audience will be some of the Sunnyview residents! This will be an opportunity for any county 4-H member to practice demonstration and public speaking skills while being judged. Participants will receive ribbons and premiums.
4-H Scholarship to BCCC - The George and Judy Marburger Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to a graduating senior of a Butler County high school or a current student at BCCC. Applicants must be a member in the Butler County 4-H program.
Butler Fair - June 27 - July 5 - Butler Fairgounds at Prospect. 4-H clubs have the opportunity to set up exhibits centered on the Fair theme and compete for premiums. The Fair provides classes for 4-H members and also youth awards. In addition to classes in individual project areas, a Livestock Judging Contest is also held with classes in beef, sheep, swine, dairy, breeds and feed ID, and equipment ID.
County 4-H Barnyard Petting Zoo at the Butler Fair - June 27- July 5 - A countywide effort to provide a Barnyard Petting Zoo organized and run by 4-H members, parents, and leaders. Each club is asked to provide help for at least one 4 hr. shift. This serves as a community service project plus a fund-raiser for the county 4-H program.
Poster Contest for the Barnyard Petting Zoo - Posters due in the Extension Office on Friday, June 20. Posters will be displayed at the Petting Zoo during the Fair. There are four age divisions: 8-11 yrs., 12-15 yrs., 16-18 yrs., and under 8 yrs. Premiums and a trophy will be given to winners in each age division. The theme for all posters is "Animals Down On The Farm."

West Central District Dairy Show - July 20-21 at Lawrence County Fairgrounds
County 4-H Night Camp - July 22-23 - Held at the Butler Farm Show grounds at 6-9 p.m. for youth ages 8-12.
Regional 4-H Horse Production Shows - Mercer on July 28 and Westmoreland County on July 29.
State Achievement Days - Aug. 5-7 Held at Penn State University Park for 4-H'ers ages 13 and older. Competitions are held in various project areas.
Project record books will be checked prior to roundup for all animal projects. Non-animal project books must be completed and turned in with the roundup exhibit at the 4-H/Youth Building at the Butler Farm Show on check-in day.
Butler Farm Show - August 4-9 - All roundups, except horse, are held in conjunction with Farm Show. Project check-ins are held on Sunday, August 3rd at various times. In addition to classes in individual project areas, a 4-H/FFA Livestock Sale, 4-H Demonstration Contest, and 4-H Dance are also held.
County 4-H Horse and Pony Roundup - August 23 - Butler Fairgrounds.
NW District Dairy Show - August 29-30 Crawford County Fairgrounds
Mon-Valley District Dairy Show - August 29-30 Fayette County Fairgrounds
District X 4-H Horse and Pony Show - September 5-7 - Fayette County Fairgrounds

Butler County 4-H Auction - September 20 - Butler Farm Showgrounds
Regional 4-H Small Animal Show - September 20 in Greene County.
County Award Applications - Due on Wednesday, October 1, 2008 - Award applications and completed project books due in Extension Office for: AgChoice Farm Credit, Grange, PA Farm Bureau, Outstanding 4-H Project, Outstanding 4-H'er, and Blue Ribbon Club.
National 4-H Week - October 5-11
Northeast States 4-H Leader Forum - Oct. 23-26 in New Hampshire
State 4-H Horse Show - October 24-26 - PA Farm Show Complex, Harrisburg
County Leader Recognition and 4-H Achievement Banquet - Late October or early November, exact date and location to be announced. Countywide 4-H banquet held for ALL 4-H members, leaders and their families. 4-H'ers compete for Grange, Farm Credit, Outstanding Project, and Outstanding 4-H'er Awards.
